I believe I have solved the problem. While repeated trying to mount the USB HDD, I noticed that after about 20-30 seconds, the iMac27 repeatedly gave me a warning message that the drive was not ejected properly. So I decided to try pushing the EJECT button (next to F12) on my keyboard. I did this several times, then when power down--power up done on HDD, it mounted. I was then able to download a software update from Seagate and install it. The update was the Seagate program for downloading and preserving media from online social programs.
